Duanwu Festival, also known as the Dragon Boat Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar. Although its exact origins are unclear, one popular legend attributes the festival to the memory of the ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan. Disgusted by the corruption of the Chu government, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River. To prevent fish from desecrating his body, local villagers threw zongzi, sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves, into the river. They also rowed dragon boats to scare the fish away with the sound of drums and the dragon-headed prows of the boats.

The Dragon Boat Festival, also referred to as Duanwu, is observed on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese lunar calendar. For millennia, this festival has been characterized by the consumption of zongzi and dragon boat races. Zongzi are pyramid-shaped dumplings made of glutinous rice, typically wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves and filled with meat, nuts, and sometimes egg yolk. The races involve teams paddling dragon boats, replicating the villagers' attempt to rescue Qu Yuan or scare the fish away.

Food plays a significant role in the Dragon Boat Festival. Zongzi, the festival's traditional food, symbolizes the rice balls thrown into the river to distract the fish. Today, zongzi come in various flavors, reflecting regional differences. Dragon boat racing, once a local custom, has become an international sport. Realgar wine, an alcoholic beverage, is sometimes drunk during the festival for its supposed protective properties.

Tzung tzu, or zongzi, is a popular dish made of rice dumplings filled with meat, peanuts, egg yolk, or other ingredients, wrapped in bamboo leaves. This tradition is meant to recall the rice thrown into the Miluo River to appease the river dragons and save Qu Yuan. Zongzi varies in taste across China, with northern regions famous for their date-filled zongzi, while Jiaxing County in eastern China is renowned for its pork-stuffed variety. In Guangdong province, zongzi are typically filled with pork, chestnuts, and other rich ingredients. In Sichuan, they are often served with a sweet sauce.
