hostilities和war的区别?

hostilities只有“战争”的意思。
war除了战争以外还有其它意思（http://www.baidu.com/?ie=gb2312&bs=&sr=&z=&ct=1048576&cl=3&f=8&word=war）。

此外，hostilities是复数名词（即只有复数形式而没有单数形式的名词），所以谓语动词要用复数。而war则是一个普通的名词，该用单数时用单数，该用复数时用复数。

Dont just rely on dictionaries when we learn English.

Remember the US President. After 911 incident, he declared that was a war against the USA.

In 60s, the USA had a war in Vietnam, but in 70s China only had a conflict or hostility with Vietnam because we never declared a war against them.

In international laws, a war must be declared by the nations involved while hostility or conflict can be fought without such a procere.

Also, a conflict/hostility is usually a short, brief and isolated incident of battle while a war consists of a series of battles.

Currently, what is happening at Middle East is only a conflict/hostility, but not a war, since the 2 countries never declared a war against each other and the confrontation is still small in scale.
